Born as a McDonnell Douglas jet in the early 1970s, the F/A-18 Hornet is a proven carrier-borne strike fighter, only to be superseded by the uprated and larger Super Hornet – the US Navy’s replacement for the mighty F-14 Tomcat and star of the forthcoming movie Top Gun: Maverick, complete with Tom Cruise as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell.
