ALLIED SUBMARINE OPERATIONS IN GREECE DURING WORLD WAR II (1941-1944) - Based on the war diaries of the Allied Submarines and of the German Navy.

The story of Allied submarine operations in Greece during World War Two is an intriguing tale of patrols in shallow sunlit waters which were dangerous for them. There were many allied submarines (British, Greek, Polish, French and Dutch) that operated from Malta, Alexandria and Beirut in all greek seas from 1940 to 1944, wreaking havoc on the Axis naval forces and shipping. 

They observed enemy movemets, laid mines, landed supplies and men for clandestine purposes, but they also harassed and disrupted the traffic between the major ports and the outlying garrisons in the tens of islands the Axis occupied and fought the surface and submarine forces the Axis possessed in the area with great success.

These operations were not conducted only against unarmed caiques carrying provisions and submarines were sunk by the, mostly, converted sub-chasers the Kriegsmarine operated in the area. There, also, were submarine versus submarine and submarine versus caique clashes and the submarines were harassed by the few Luftwaffe planes in the area (mostly Arado floatplanes).
