Following the five ships of the "Fleet Sample", which nautical qualities and military value were more than questionable, France began construction in 1893 of its first real series of battleships: the "Charlemagne".
Spearheading the "Royale" for several years, the arrival of the British Dreadnought in 1906 sounded the death knell of this kind of battleship. The Charlemagne, Saint Louis and Gaulois nevertheless fought with honour during the First World War.
