- A SHORT HISTORY OF THE PRINOS AIRFIELD (IN THASOS ISLAND):
During WWI, Greece joined the Entente forces (British, French, Canadians, Australians etc.).
Thasosʼ geostrategic location highlighted the need to build (in March 1916) one of the most important military airbases in the broader area of Northeastern Aegean.
Between May 1916 and the end of the war, British and Commonwealth pilots alongside their Greek counterparts were stationed at the airfield to undertake combat and reconnaissance missions against the German forces and their Bulgarian allies whose airbases were in Drama, and against the Turks operating together with the Germans from Kallipoli area and the Dardanelles.
It is thus clearly understood that the island of Thasos and most particularly, the Prinos Airbase, was strategically essential for aerial warfare.
The extensive research on WWI history in Thasos, which began in 2011 a special team formed only for this purpose, brought to light as well finds of global focus such as the remains of a Sopwith Camel F1 plane, which fell in the slopes of Kallirachi; these remains have been collected and are safely kept with the hope that a museum will be built for them...
