Battleships , battle cruisers and other heavy cruisers of the Kriegsmarine were all escorted by zerstörers inevitable and in the majority of their operations. Except the Mediterranean , they traveled almost all European seas accompanying vapors , attacking convoys , serving as fire support to troops on the ground, setting up minefields and tracking submarines .
In the Norwegian Sea or Baltic , crews were exposed to the rigors of northern climates .
